Apple Berkeley Photo Contest

Photo Tip!

Many new digital cameras allow the photographer to modify shutter speed and lens aperture. Changing shutter speed modifies the length of time your "film" is exposed to light. Aperture refers to the amount of light that enters your camera. A wide aperture allows more light in; a narrow aperture allows less light in.

These options are there for a reason. Experiment with them! A long shutter paired with a narrow aperture can give your photo cool blurring / smoothing effects (a tripod can be useful for exposures longer than one second). A short shutter paired with a wide aperture will produce a photo where only your subject is in focus; objects in the foreground and background will be blurred.
